New Work - 2026

These works sit alongside Unbecoming, an evolving poetry and painting project exploring the quiet transformations that happen across a lifetime.

Each paintin begins in observation, branches, grasses, shifting light and moves slowly toward something more internal: memory, atmosphere, and the feelng of a place held in time.

Original works from this series will be released gradually. Limited Edition Prints will be available this Summer.

UNBECOMING

Embers Beneath

Painted during the transition between winter and early spring, this work explores the moment when colour begins to return to the woodland floor. Deep blues and muted greys hold the structure of branches and shadow, while warm tones surface beneath like mebers slowly coming back to life.

Wind and Fire

Part of the Wind and Fire series, this painting reflects the energy of grasses and seed heads moving in shifting air. Layered red and burnt tones suggest warmth and movement within the landscape, where plant forms stretch upward through translucent layers of colour.

Unentangled

Inspired by the wetlands of Epping Forest during the weeks before Spring comes. It reflects the quiet depth of woodland pools and submerged branches. Light moves through the painting like water through trees, revealing fragments of colour that feel half hidden beneath the surface.

Wild Surrender

An exploration of untamed growth and layered plant forms. Lines move freely across the surface, suggesting stems and branches that overlap and intertwine. The painting sits between abstraction and landscape, echoing the feeling of standing within all grasses at the edge of woodland.

Unbecoming

Poems and botanical paintings exploring identity, loss, and the quiet transformations that shape a life.

About the Project

Unbecoming is an evolving collection of poems and botanical paintings by Hayley Anne Montague.

The work explores the subtle, often hidden process of change that unfolds across a lifetime. The space between becoming someone new while slowly unbecoming who we once were.

Many of the poems reflect on the expectations we place on ourselves, the quiet shock of reality when life moves in a different direction, and the unexpected ways loss reshapes us.
